Nourish: Conference of Publication Design
I wanted to create a conference for something I was interested in. I am a big fan of print design and magazines specifically, so I decided to make my conference about publication design. With everything becoming so technology driven, there were not many publication or editorial conferences at all. Technology is still prevalent in this field, and how everyone in this field creates their work with this technology, but the end goal is a printed product. Magazines are still printed; paper is still prevalent in these times. Digital media will never give me the same excitement as picking up my favorite magazine while out running errands or receiving a physical copy in the mail.

For my logo, I knew I wanted to do a wordmark without an image. In the end I did choose the second option on the slide show below. I continued to tweak it further by adding little multicolored sparkles above the "i" and changing the color to navy blue, eliminating all black.

Activation Marketing
My activation marking proposal was having people submit spreads for a magazine style program when they signed up for the convention. Depending on how many people ended up coming it could include all of the submissions from participants. It would probably be smart to not make it mandatory. This would be a lot of pressure on some people, but I think many would enjoy doing something like this. Seeing your work in the final setting is encouraging and a big reason everyone ended up in this field. Costs for printing and labor can be covered by ticket sales. One issue would be if too many people submitted spreads, some would have to be left out. Unless there are a few different editions, then some people would be after them all and more prints would have to be made to match demand. I do not want to hurt anyone’s feelings. This is supposed to be a welcoming and encouraging setting. This program would be something people want to take home with them and show others.

Final Case Study

I wanted to create a conference for something I was interested in. I am a big fan of print design and magazines specifically, so I decided to make my conference about publication design. With everything becoming so technology driven, there were not many publication or editorial conferences at all. Technology is still prevalent in this field, and how everyone in this field creates their work with this technology, but the end goal is a printed product. I wanted the conference to be able to support all forms of publication design, as well as appeal to younger people. I thought about zoning in on “zines” specifically as well as only editorial design at the beginning but did end up going a more universal route. The look of my assets is more geared toward a younger audience while my sessions are more nitty gritty, but a lot of that is the styles and elements I use in my design. I spent a lot of time thinking about the things I learned and did during the publication project in VisCom 2.
There is so much that goes into making a multi-page printed document. From stylization to photography to layout. I tried to choose speakers and sessions that would check all of those boxes. I used Illustrator, InDesign, and photoshop to create my magazine. I also spent a lot of time playing with color and type, so I included sessions on all of those things. I also wanted to give a peek as to what is hot in the industry since that is a lot of what magazines do. Because this is not actually going to happen, I was able to choose some of the most respected and qualified speakers as well as people whose careers I follow.
I hope that people that are interested in print media would get excited about coming to this event. I would love to attend this and there would be so much to learn. I think my proposed marketing would be a selling point as well. I would love to receive a nicely printed memento from this to look back on, especially if it was a quality product and could potentially be displayed.
In the end I think it might have had been a good idea to maybe tone down the “gen z” in my design. It appeals to me and my classmates, all of them liked my font choices, assets, and colors, but how is someone who is older and more established going to feel about the neon green and rainbows? I might be thinking too much into this and they might love it. I would love feedback on this and would like to bring it to someone like a mentor. I enjoy my finished project and I am proud of the work I finished this quarter.
